Department of Educational Sociology, Danish University of Education

The Danish University of Education was established on 1 July 2000 by the merger of four institutions: the Royal Danish School of Educational Studies, the Danish National Institute for Educational Research, the Danish School of Advanced Pedagogy and the Danish National Centre for Technology-Supported Learning.

The Danish University of Education is committed to the pursuit of excellence in teaching and research. The university aims to promote research and postgraduate education at the highest level in the field educational studies and strives to enhance the quality of educational research and pedagogical practice in Denmark. The university seeks to become a leading international centre for educational research and professional development.

The Danish University of Education is a research-based university. Its research covers the entire educational field. As a result, teaching programmes are similarly comprehensive, catering for the professional needs of educators in compulsory, further and higher education, as well as other professionals. Research conducted at the university reflects the profiles of its five constituent departments and is further shaped by an institutional research policy that promotes interdisciplinary research programmes across departmental boundaries.

One of five departments making up the University, the department of Educational Sociology deals with the relationship between upbringing/education and society as well as the significance of social background factors for learning and care. In other words, reflection on the social factors in connection with processes of upbringing, education and identity formation.

The main areas of research in the department:

  • the relationship between education and society
  • Competence development in a lifelong learning perspective
  • Pedagogy in relation to target groups with special needs.
