Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU), established in 1973, is an independent research unit within the Department of Social Policy & Social Work at the University of York. The Unit carries out policy and related research which is focussed on key areas at the heart of social policy health and social care, and social security and employment. SPRU is recognised internationally as an expert centre for large scale survey research, the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and involving people often excluded from research, such as children and people with dementia. Research is funded by various public bodies, including central government, the NHS Executive, the National Lottery Charities Board, charitable trusts, and international organisations; holder under the Department Health Policy Research Programme.
